This weekend, my Mom, sister Bree, and Kyle's StepMom Mary Jo, went Antiquing while Josh, Dad, and Randy took care of the kiddos, Anna-Jane and Judah. Oh, my sister and her kids are in town for two weeks! Hooray!
The 4 of us gals stopped at a spot in HWY 6 where Bree bought 2 quilts last year.
The shop was maybe 50 feet from the owner's home, and it looked closed.
The shop was maybe 50 feet from the owner's home, and it looked closed.
The lady came out of the house in her rollers and nightgown and said she'd get dressed and let us into the shop.
She closed business recently, but still has merchandise to sell. I was planning on sitting in the car while the other girls went in, but when she brought out those 3 quilts, I spotted one and turned off the car.
I couldn't resist it:
Judah has a nickname for me, "Bah" and he yells it across the house, I love it.
We had to pose with the treasure.
After the quilt shop in Riesel, we headed to the Cedar Chest in McGregor.
I love that place, it's huge and well priced.
We went around the whole store and on the LAST aisle, I spotted a gorgeous turquoise chest/trunk. It was $50.
WHAT!? $50? H Yeah!
As I walked a few feet over to show my sister, a lady walked up to the trunk and looked at it, so I'm pretty sure she overheard me say,
"Bree, look at my trunk!"
The lady quickly turned and walked to the front.
uh oh.
(insert split second where I learn my lesson)
Mom looked at me and whispered "I think she's headed up there to buy it, you better go check." I walked back to the chest and took the tag off, as if to claim it, and started towards the front.
The store clerk and the lady ran into me and I knew.
I hold up the tag and say, "I want to buy the trunk..."
Lady says, "I'm sorry, I looked at it a few days ago and came back to look at it again today."
Store clerk says, "I'm going to stay out of it, you two are going to have to work this out."
Lady says, "I'm sorry, I already bought it." and held up the receipt.
With a surprised and acquiescent face, I said, "Okay, fine, it's yours." and handed her the tag.
I watched her go back and look at the trunk with her daughter and said to my posse,
"I can't believe that, I know she heard me call it "my trunk!""
After awhile, the lady walked down the aisle again and my Mom said to her,
"She's still pretty upset over that trunk" in her sweet Southern Momma voice.
The lady again said, "I'm so sorry, I feel awful, but I've been thinking about it for days."
I proceeded to act out like a child, only in the adult way, sighing and repeating that I can't believe how fast that happened.
A couple of minutes passed and the Lady came back to me,
"I just feel awful, were you planning on putting that trunk in your home?"
I said, "yes, I wanted to give my husband more room for his clothes in the dresser because I keep linens in it."
I said, "yes, I wanted to give my husband more room for his clothes in the dresser because I keep linens in it."
Lady replied, "I was planning on putting it outside on the pattio..."
"Outside, really?" I asked.
"Yeah, that's why I feel so bad. I told my daughter you probably wanted to put it inside and I can find other storage, so if you want the trunk, you can have it."
Woah.
"No, it's okay. You got it first." (feeling guilty for whining)
Lady continued, "I asked my daughter what I should do and she said it would be nice to let you have it, but that I didn't have to, but I think I'm going to let you buy it."
"Are you sure?" I venture...
"Yeah, it's okay. You can have it." says Lady.
"I'll pay you $60 for it." (now I'm feeling really badly)
"Oh no, I don't want to make a profit off you, I even got it 10% off, so I only paid $46."
I ask if she has change for a large bill, but my Mom thinks better of wasting time and produces $50 in cash for me to seal the deal asap. And we do. I gave Lady the cash and she gave me the receipt. I thanked her profusely and rolled this sucker out to the trunk in two minutes flat:
oh, I love it.
One day, it'll serve as a toy chest, but for now, it's just fun to stare at and use as storage.
The End.
Thank you, Lady.
